OnTrace owns and operates the Ontario Agriculture Product Registry (OAPR) system, which was built by Intelliware and launched in June 2008. This system is the foundation for the traceability solutions OnTrace delivers and is an essential component in a national traceability system for agriculture and food. It provides a consolidated view of agricultural property information and activity by retrieving data from multiple data systems.
When dealing with over 220,000 agricultural premises in Ontario, the need to access the OAPR system while on location became apparent. This requirement meant not only accessing data about the premise remotely, but also being able to enrich and enhance it. OnTrace partnered with Intelliware to build a BlackBerry® mobile application that further extends their premises identification capabilities.
Intelliware developed a custom BlackBerry app that delivers high business value for agriculture and food traceability. The app uses the native GPS capacity of the device to securely query the OAPR system and then display premises information in a user-friendly manner. In addition, the app can be used while on location to add secondary site survey data (such as information on structures and natural features) to further enrich the premises profile in either the OAPR or the user’s own system.
The OnTrace app is currently in pilot. Once fully launched, the app’s anywhere, anytime secure access to the OAPR system will provide an extremely powerful tool to enable more rapid and effective planning and response to emergency situations. In addition, the OnTrace app will greatly increase the reliability and usefulness of information within the OAPR through its ability to collect and send additional data. In emergency situations that require fast response and reliable, relevant data, the app can provide responders with a valuable tool.
